This series was inspired by the work of Frank Lloyd Wright at the turn of the century. His Arts & Crafts aesthetic evolved at a time when the Industrial Revolution was just around the corner. Uncertainly was in the air, and people longed for solid, honest, no-frills furniture built by human hands, not machines. We wanted to reproduce the strength and integrity of Arts & Crafts style, with a twist. Starting with the table, we raised the top to make it look as if it were floating. For contrast, we added ebony slats, a center gap, and ebony butterfly-shaped dovetails. What started out as a thoroughly Western piece suddenly took on a distinctly Japanese flavor. We later discovered that Frank Lloyd Wright had been an impassioned collector of colored Japanese prints called ukiyo-e, which is Japanese for “pictures of the floating world.” The Floating World Collection represents the multiculturalism that has become our global identity – our floating world.
